Elgin High School Comets Prep for a Promising 2025 Varsity Football Season
Elgin High School Comets, under the guidance of Head Coach Zack Winslow, is set to kick off their 2025 varsity football season on August 21 against River Valley at the Elgin Football Field. The team aims to build on last season's playoff appearance and a commendable final record of 5-6. This season marks Coach Winslow's sixth year with a career coaching record of 28-25. The Comets have lost several key players due to graduation including Landon Shepard, Gavin Rhodes, and three others who contributed significantly over the past four years. Nonetheless, the team sees the return of vital players like quarterback Jack VanGundy, Brennon Luikart, and Garrett Lowry, providing a solid foundation with four returning starters on the offensive line. Coach Winslow expressed optimism about the continuity these players bring, and his confidence in the team's preparation, citing a strong preseason and the team's readiness to vie for a league championship and a home playoff game. The 2025 schedule is packed with challenges and highlights, including the homecoming game on September 26 against Lucas and the Senior Night on October 17 against Perry. These events are anticipated to draw significant community involvement, reflecting the local enthusiasm for Friday night football as emphasized by Mr. James. With strategic gameplay and robust team dynamics, the Comets look forward to a competitive season.
