Fostoria took control in the first inning and never let Mansfield Senior back into the game Saturday, rolling to a 10-0 home victory on Grant Jackson Field. The Redmen scored twice in the opening inning, added five more in the third and put the game out of reach in the fifth behind Dawson Smith’s inside-the-park home run and a two-run single from Amarius Velazquez.
The decisive stretch came early. Fostoria broke through in the bottom of the first when Boston Trent drew a walk and another run scored after Mansfield Senior dropped a third strike. That quick 2-0 edge only grew in the third. Sergio Salazar singled to center, Emmanuel Jimenez-Reza lined a single down the right-field line, Dawson Smith followed with another single down the right-field line, Blake Hernandez worked a walk, and the Redmen also scored on a passed ball during a five-run inning that pushed the margin to 7-0.
Fostoria finished the scoring in the fifth. Smith raced all the way around for a solo inside-the-park home run, and Velazquez added a single that brought home two more runs. Smith, batting in the middle of the lineup, drove in two runs and finished 2-for-3. Velazquez also made an impact on both sides of the ball, delivering the two-run hit after earning the win on the mound.
Velazquez set the tone as Fostoria’s starter, allowing two hits and no runs over four innings while striking out seven and walking two. Aiden Stewart followed in relief to close out the shutout. Mansfield Senior starter Dominique Horn allowed 10 runs, five earned, on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Horn struck out six and walked five.
Fostoria also pressured Mansfield Senior constantly on the bases, stealing 12 bags in the win. Jimenez-Reza, Rey Varela, Salazar, Jayden Sirmons and Smith each had multiple stolen bases. Sean Tanner collected both of Mansfield Senior’s hits and went 2-for-3, while the visitors played a clean defensive game without an error. Horn led Mansfield Senior with four defensive plays.
With the win, Fostoria turned a clear, cool Saturday into a one-sided result and heads into its next game against Maumee on Monday carrying momentum from a complete performance at the plate, on the bases and on the mound.
