Fostoria’s boys tennis team turned in a confident home performance Thursday night, topping Evergreen 4-1 behind a pair of decisive singles victories, a gritty three-set win, and a strong showing in doubles. The Redmen protected their home courts at 1001 Park Ave. and piled up points across the lineup to secure the team result.

Gulmaro Vargas-Tovias set the tone at second singles with one of the team’s sharpest matches of the evening, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. At third singles, Jayceon Phillips delivered one of the night’s toughest efforts. After taking the opening set 6-2, Phillips was pushed in the second and dropped a tiebreaker before regrouping in the third for a 6-2 closing set. That resilience gave the Redmen another key point and added energy to the overall team win.

In doubles play, Royal Ferguson and Reece Blair gave Fostoria another steady performance at first doubles, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win. The pair controlled the match early and maintained that edge through the second set, helping the Redmen keep momentum on their side. Evergreen was unable to field a second doubles team, which awarded Fostoria the final point it needed in the 4-1 decision.

Evergreen is coached by Fostoria High School alum, Stan Schmidt, who is the son of long time Fostoria AD, Pete Schmidt. It was nice to have Coach Schmidt return back to FHS where he starred on the courts during his high school career.

Coach Fleming is pleased at the continued improvement of the whole team this season.

Landan Sherman faced a tough challenge at first singles and fell 1-6, 1-6, accounting for Evergreen’s lone team point. Even with that result, Fostoria’s depth showed throughout the rest of the lineup. The Redmen answered with winning tennis in multiple spots, from Vargas-Tovias’ dominant straight-set result to Phillips’ three-set battle and the composed doubles effort from Ferguson and Blair.

The victory was a balanced one for Fostoria City Schools, with contributors across both singles and doubles. On a night when every match mattered, the Redmen came through with a complete team effort and plenty for the home crowd to celebrate, finishing with a 4-1 win over Evergreen.
