MARION, Ind. — Goshen College fell behind early and could not slow a powerful Indiana Wesleyan lineup in a 14-1, five-inning loss Friday afternoon at Sue Bowman Field.
The Maple Leafs gave up three runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third before the Wildcats broke the game open with an eight-run fourth. The contest ended after five innings by run rule, with Indiana Wesleyan not needing to bat in the bottom of the fifth.
Goshen’s offense produced five hits against Wildcats starter Isabelle Beidelschies, breaking through in the top of the third. After a leadoff baserunner, Tatem Adams lined a single to right field to score Audrey White, trimming the deficit to 5-1 at the time. Adams reached base in all three plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk to pace the Maple Leafs’ attack.
Indiana Wesleyan answered immediately in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Whitney Waddell and then put the game out of reach in the fourth. The Wildcats strung together a series of extra-base hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Alexis Thompson and a grand slam-style, four-RBI home run to left by Maddie Martin, pushing the margin to 14-1. Thompson went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Martin finished with five RBIs on the day.
The Maple Leafs’ pitching staff worked 4.0 innings and was charged with 14 runs, 11 earned, on 12 hits and six walks. Though Indiana Wesleyan consistently applied pressure on the bases, Goshen limited the damage to a single error and recorded several routine plays to close out innings, including handling multiple balls in play during the Wildcats’ extended fourth inning.
Defensively, Indiana Wesleyan backed Beidelschies with an error-free afternoon and cleanly fielded Goshen’s contact, stranding six Maple Leafs on base. Beidelschies earned the win with 4.0 innings of work, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four on just 55 pitches. The Wildcats’ staff held Goshen without an extra-base hit and issued only two walks along with two hit batters.
Goshen finished with five hits, two walks and a sacrifice while being held scoreless in four of the five innings. The Maple Leafs will look to carry Adams’ productive day at the plate into their next outing as they continue early-season play against Crossroads League competition.
