A dominant outing from Dylan Pearson was not enough for Goshen College on Friday night, as the Maple Leafs fell 1-0 to Indiana Wesleyan in a seven-inning pitchers’ duel in Marion, Indiana. The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk, and Indiana Wesleyan starter Noah Wathen made it stand with a complete-game shutout.

Pearson and Wathen traded strikeouts all evening in warm, breezy conditions — 78 degrees with winds gusting out of the west — as both lineups struggled to generate sustained offense. Pearson worked 6.0 innings for Goshen, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out 10 and walking four on 94 pitches. The right-hander kept the Maple Leafs within a run throughout, retiring hitters with a mix of power and command that limited the Wildcats to a single hit and five runners left on base.

Indiana Wesleyan broke through in the bottom of the first inning in what proved to be the decisive sequence. After loading the bases, the Wildcats pushed across the only run of the game when Carson Bush drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Braxton Brosmer for a 1-0 lead. Pearson settled in from there, preventing further damage and holding Indiana Wesleyan scoreless the rest of the way, but the early walk was enough to decide the contest.

Offensively, Goshen put four hits on the board against Wathen but could not come up with the timely swing to break through. The Maple Leafs’ best chance came in the top of the seventh inning, when Fernando Marte Santana doubled to right field for the team’s only extra-base hit of the night. Marte Santana finished 2-for-3 to account for half of Goshen’s hits, but Wathen recorded key strikeouts to strand runners and close out the threat.

Wathen was the story for Indiana Wesleyan, striking out the side in the top of the first inning and setting the tone for his outing. He went the distance, throwing 7.0 shutout innings while allowing four hits, walking none and striking out 16 on 103 pitches. Goshen hitters finished with 16 strikeouts and no walks across 25 at-bats, managing to put the ball in play only sporadically against the right-hander.

Despite the loss, the Maple Leafs’ pitching line underscored how narrow the margin was. Goshen’s staff allowed just one run on one hit with 10 strikeouts and four walks, committing no errors in the field. The Wildcats finished with one run on one hit and no errors, leaving five runners on base in a game that lasted just 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Goshen will look to build on Pearson’s strong performance and the late offensive push from Marte Santana as the Maple Leafs move deeper into the spring schedule. Limiting opponents to one run and one hit on the road provided a solid foundation; turning that level of pitching into wins will hinge on finding a few more key swings in future outings.
