Goshen College dropped a pitchers’ duel on the road Friday evening, falling 3-0 to Indiana Wesleyan at Sue Bowman Field in Marion, Indiana, as the Maple Leafs were held to a single hit over seven innings.
The decisive stretch came in the bottom of the second inning, when the Wildcats broke a scoreless game with a pair of runs. A sacrifice fly to right field by Sara Ruble brought home Courtney Thomas for a 1-0 lead, and Danica Fuller followed with an infield single to third that plated Leah May to make it 2-0. Indiana Wesleyan later added insurance in the fifth, when Maddie Martin singled to right to score Whitney Waddell and push the margin to 3-0.
Goshen starter Camryn Barrows turned in a complete-game effort in the circle, keeping the Maple Leafs within striking distance throughout. Barrows worked 6.0 innings and was charged with six hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out three on 112 pitches. The right-hander allowed just one run in four of the six frames and helped limit Indiana Wesleyan to four runners left on base.
Defensively, Goshen backed Barrows with a clean night in the field, committing no errors while navigating traffic against an Indiana Wesleyan lineup that finished with six hits and three stolen bases. The Maple Leafs contained the Wildcats to single runs in only two innings and kept the game within three despite Indiana Wesleyan’s pressure on the basepaths.
Offensively, however, Goshen could not solve Indiana Wesleyan starter Avery Toole. The Maple Leafs managed just one hit and one walk while being held scoreless, stranding four runners on base. Toole faced minimal trouble across seven frames, retiring the side in order multiple times and preventing Goshen from mounting a sustained rally.
Toole closed out a complete-game shutout for the Wildcats, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five on 97 pitches. Indiana Wesleyan finished with a 3-0 edge on the scoreboard, a 6-1 advantage in hits and the only error of the contest, while Goshen’s pitching and defense kept the deficit manageable despite the quiet night at the plate.
The Maple Leafs will look to build on Barrows’ complete game and the team’s error-free defense as they continue their early-season road slate and search for more consistent offensive production.
