Marian University used a nine-run first inning to take control early and handed Goshen College a 10-0, five-inning loss Saturday afternoon at the MU Softball Diamond in Indianapolis.
The Knights sent 13 batters to the plate in the opening frame, capitalizing on walks, defensive miscues and a string of extra-base hits to build a 9-0 lead that Goshen was unable to overcome. Marian later tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning to invoke the run-rule and close out the series opener between the Crossroads League programs.
Esme Pico started in the circle for the Maple Leafs and worked four innings, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with three walks and one strikeout over 90 pitches. Only two of the runs were earned as three Goshen errors extended multiple innings and contributed to Marian’s early surge. Pico settled in after the first, holding the Knights scoreless in the second and third innings to give the Maple Leafs a chance to regroup defensively.
Offensively, Goshen finished with three hits against Marian right-hander Macy Coan, who turned in a complete-game shutout. The Maple Leafs also drew a walk and reached once via hit-by-pitch but left four runners on base and were unable to come up with a timely extra-base hit. Marian’s defense backed Coan with error-free play, limiting Goshen’s opportunities to extend innings or apply sustained pressure on the basepaths.
Marian’s decisive first inning began with a leadoff double from Abbey Hofmann, and the frame stayed alive as Delaney Rundle reached on a bunt and a throwing error. From there, the Knights mixed in four doubles, including two from Mati Hughes, who drove in four runs with a pair of shots to the gaps. Walks and additional defensive errors prolonged the inning as Marian built a 9-0 cushion before the Maple Leafs could record the third out.
The Knights added their final run in the fourth when Mallorie Beutel doubled to right field to bring in another tally, pushing the margin to 10-0. Coan then retired the side in order in the top of the fifth to complete her 64-pitch outing, which featured three strikeouts and just one walk.
Goshen moves forward from the setback with several clean defensive frames and stretches of composed pitching from Pico to build on as the Maple Leafs continue Crossroads League play. The team returns to action looking to translate those positives into a more complete performance over seven innings in its next conference contests.
