Goshen College dropped a 3-0 volleyball match to Lawrence Tech University on Friday night, falling 25-16, 25-16, 26-24 at Don Ridler Fieldhouse in Southfield, Michigan. The Maple Leafs were unable to break through in the opening two sets but pushed the final set past regulation before Lawrence Tech closed out the sweep.
Lawrence Tech controlled much of the match behind a more efficient attack, finishing with 38 kills and a .256 hitting percentage. Goshen had 26 kills and hit .038 while also committing 23 attack errors. LTU setter Pedro Aguiar directed the offense with 29 assists, and Yegor Volkov led the Blue Devils with 13 kills on .346 hitting to go with six block assists and 18 points.
The first two sets followed a similar pattern. Lawrence Tech created separation in the middle stages of each set, with Volkov producing key kills in the opener and later adding a service ace in the second. Goshen stayed within range early, but both sets ended 25-16 after late attack errors. Gavin Furgerson committed the final attack error in each of the first two sets as LTU took firm control of the match.
The third set was Goshen’s best stretch of the night, and it included the team’s first lead of any set when the Maple Leafs moved in front 23-22. That late surge gave Goshen a chance to extend the match after trailing throughout the evening. Ben Koop helped fuel the rally and finished with six kills, one ace and 8.5 points, while Bruno Barac added seven kills on 13 attempts with just one error, plus five digs and two block assists.
Goshen eventually forced deuce at 24-24, but Lawrence Tech answered at the finish. Mario Cid delivered a kill for match point at 25-24, and the next rally ended on a Goshen attack error by Mathis Doladille, sealing the 26-24 final set. The Maple Leafs also totaled seven team blocks and 25 digs, showing more resistance at the net and on the back line as the match tightened late.
Still, Lawrence Tech’s balance and steadier execution proved decisive. Akram Askoul added seven kills and three blocks for the home side, which finished with 12 team blocks and 37 assists. Goshen’s strongest opening came too late to change the result, arriving only when the Maple Leafs grabbed that 23-22 edge in the third before LTU regained control over the final two points.
