Goshen College women’s tennis picked up one singles and one doubles victory but came up short against No. 10 Marian, falling 6-1 in Crossroads League play Friday afternoon at the Healthplex in Indianapolis.

The Maple Leafs’ lone singles point came from No. 4 player Vishmi Serasinghe, who delivered a straight-sets win over Jimena Rivera Flores. Serasinghe controlled key service games on the way to a 6-3, 6-4 victory, giving Goshen its only result in the singles lineup against a Marian squad that improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in league action.

In doubles, Goshen earned a solid result at the No. 2 spot, where the pairing of Maria Clara Fonte and Blanka Bodo posted a 6-3 win over Marian’s Michelle Irigoyen and Rivera Flores. The Maple Leafs’ duo provided early momentum by securing their flight, giving Goshen one of the three doubles outcomes on the day.

Marian claimed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. At the top spot, the Knights’ combination of Yasmin Imamniyazova and Ana Lopez Torres edged Marin Kawano and Serasinghe 6-4, while at No. 3, Liliane Alinquant and Ana Barbosa topped Uliana Dotsenko and Otin O’Callaghan 6-3. Those results gave Marian a 2-1 edge in doubles before singles play began.

In singles action, Goshen faced a deep Marian lineup that took five of the six courts. At No. 1, Dotsenko fell 6-2, 6-2 to Imamniyazova, while at No. 2 Bodo pushed Lopez Torres to a first-set tiebreak before dropping a 7-6(4), 6-0 decision. Fonte was turned back 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 by Irigoyen, and at No. 5 Kawano battled through another tight second set before falling 6-2, 7-6(4) to Alinquant. At No. 6, Sara Nino forced a close second set but ultimately came up short 6-1, 7-5 against Paloma Caceres.

Despite the team result, the Maple Leafs produced several competitive stretches against the nationally ranked Knights, highlighted by Serasinghe’s straight-sets win and the doubles success of Fonte and Bodo. Those performances contributed to Goshen’s 1-1 split in points across singles and doubles play.

Goshen moves to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in Crossroads League competition with the loss, while Marian opens conference play at 1-0. The Maple Leafs will look to build on their individual wins and close contests as they continue league action in the coming weeks.
