Grant Union Defense Powers 26-8 Road Win Over Weston-McEwen
Grant Union delivered timely fourth-down stops and a determined goal-line stand to secure a 26-8 varsity football victory over Weston-McEwen on Friday, Sept. 25, at Weston-McEwen High School. Playing in clear, 53-degree conditions, the Prospectors combined a tough defensive performance with four offensive touchdowns to earn the road win.
The defense supplied the decisive moments by repeatedly standing firm when Weston-McEwen threatened to extend drives. Grant Union turned away fourth-down attempts and protected the goal line, limiting the home team to eight points. Those stops reflected a complete team effort and gave the Prospectors' offense opportunities to take control.
Jack Knowles led the Prospectors in tackles and joined Ukiah Snapp as a disruptive presence in the backfield. Both defenders recorded strong tackles for loss, helping Grant Union halt plays before they could develop. Their work set the tone for a unit that stayed disciplined in high-pressure situations and made its biggest plays when Weston-McEwen needed only a few yards.
Grant Union was balanced with the ball, finishing with 282 yards of offense. The Prospectors passed for 136 yards and two touchdowns while adding 146 rushing yards and two more scores. That production allowed the offense to challenge Weston-McEwen through the air and on the ground, complementing the defense's stops with enough sustained scoring to build an 18-point final margin.
The program added another victory Monday, Sept. 28, when the junior varsity team defeated Irrigon 36-12. With many of the younger players staying on the field for nearly the entire game, Jaxyn and Jase connected on strong throws and catches offensively, while Danner and AJ delivered key defensive stops. The effort made it a rewarding stretch for Grant Union football at both levels.
The varsity Prospectors return home to face Riverside at Grant Union High School on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. PDT, carrying forward the physical defense, balanced offense and team-first play that powered the road victory.
