BAKER CITY, Ore. - Grant Union’s junior varsity volleyball team finished 2-1 at the Baker JV Tournament on Saturday, earning victories over Ontario and Enterprise while taking its only loss against La Grande. The winning record gave the Prospectors a productive day of competition against three eastern Oregon opponents.

The tournament was not originally part of Grant Union’s plan for the week. The Prospectors had been scheduled to compete at the Heppner Tournament, but that event was canceled. Grant Union instead traveled to Baker City, allowing the JV players to retain a valuable tournament date and face multiple opponents in one setting.

Grant Union’s three-match schedule presented a variety of tests. La Grande handed the Prospectors their lone defeat, but the team secured wins against Ontario and Enterprise to leave Baker City with a winning record. Playing three matches also gave the Prospectors repeated chances to respond to momentum changes, work together on the court and maintain their focus throughout an extended day.

The tournament’s value extended beyond the two victories. Grant Union’s JV players gained competitive experience while continuing to build confidence as a group. The event provided important court time for the team to develop its cohesion and apply lessons from one match to the next against changing competition.

With a 2-1 tournament showing complete, the Prospectors will turn their attention to their next road match. Grant Union is scheduled to play at Prairie City on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. PDT.
