Grant Union Tops Gold Beach 20-8 Behind Ground Game and Defensive Score
GOLD BEACH, Ore. - Grant Union turned a productive rushing attack and a momentum-changing defensive touchdown into a 20-8 nonleague victory over Gold Beach on Saturday at Gold Beach High School. Everett Vardenega's fumble recovery for a touchdown provided the game's decisive swing as the Prospectors limited Gold Beach to eight points in clear, 65-degree conditions.
Landyn Beil led Grant Union's offense with 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns, finishing as both the team's leading rusher and leading scorer. The performance gave the Prospectors a reliable option on the ground and accounted for two of their three touchdowns in the 12-point victory.
Garrrett Ashley added 49 rushing yards as Grant Union's second-leading ball carrier. Together, Vardenega and Beil produced 159 yards on the ground, giving the Prospectors multiple contributors in the rushing attack and helping the offense generate enough scoring to complement a strong defensive performance.
Grant Union's defense supplied one of the game's biggest plays when Vardenega recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. The Prospectors also received a team-high 11.5 tackles from Rowdy Wilson, whose activity helped hold Gold Beach to eight points. That combination of sure tackling and turnover production allowed Grant Union to protect its advantage.
The Prospectors finished with touchdowns from both sides of the ball, pairing Beils's two rushing scores with Vardenega's fumble return. Grant Union will next travel to face Culver at 7 p.m. PDT on Friday, Sept. 11.
