Grant Union finished its first home tournament with a 2-3 record, earning two victories over Dayville while dropping close matches to Gold Beach, Lakeview and Prairie City. Although the Prospectors did not come away with wins in each of their five matches, they remained competitive throughout the tournament and gained valuable experience against a varied field.
The two wins over Dayville highlighted a weekend in which Grant Union continued to develop its consistency and confidence. The Prospectors also stayed within reach against Gold Beach, Lakeview and Prairie City, turning each match into a close contest. Those tight matches provided opportunities for the team to work through pressure, sharpen its execution and continue building chemistry early in the season.
Serving was one of Grant Union's strengths. Skylrr McQuown led the Prospectors with a 91.1% serving rate, while Haven Giffin finished at 90.0%. Giffin's steady work from the service line was part of an impressive all-around tournament. She also recorded a .173 hitting percentage, stepping confidently into a larger role and making an impact in multiple phases of play.
Grant Union also received productive attacking performances from several hitters. Alana Shaffer posted the team's top hitting percentage at .214, followed by Giffin at .173 and Kara Hansen at .129. Their efficiency gave the Prospectors dependable options at the net and helped the team stay close during its three losses.
The tournament represented another significant step for Gracee Hueckman, who moved from libero to setter this season. She totaled 74 assists while running the offense, locating hitters and continuing to learn the responsibilities of her new position. Her positive approach to the transition helped Grant Union maintain its offensive organization across a demanding five-match schedule.
The results and individual numbers reflected the Prospectors' preparation, teamwork and continued growth. Grant Union will next travel to face Crane at 5 p.m. PDT Friday, Sept. 4, with the team looking to build on its two wins and the experience gained from three close matches.
