Prospectors Gain Experience at Cove-Union Middle School Meet

COVE, Ore. - Grant Union’s middle school cross country runners continued their season Friday with encouraging individual performances at the Cove-Union Middle School meet. Sam Bailey led the Prospectors’ boys with an 11th-place finish, while Nox Long Cowan opened the season with a personal-best performance as Grant Union’s only girls runner. Team scores and overall team placements were not available.
The third week of the middle school season brought the Prospectors to the historic Ascension School grounds for a 10:45 a.m. start. The meet featured Union-Cove, La Grande, Imbler and Grant Union, creating a larger field than the previous year. Runners competed in junior varsity and varsity groupings, with the featured distance measuring 3 kilometers and some races contested over 2.5 kilometers.
The flat course gave runners an early-season opportunity to test pacing, positioning and finishing strategy. The larger field also added an important pack-running element, allowing athletes to gauge effort alongside competitors and learn when to stay with a group or make a move. Partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 52 degrees provided cool conditions for the races.
Sam Bailey produced Grant Union’s top boys result by placing 11th against strong competition. The finish gave the Prospectors a solid performance at the front of their group and provided a benchmark as the season moves forward. Ezra Randleas. Ezra also made a notable debut in a first cross country race, gaining experience with race pace, pack positioning and the demands of the course.
Long Cowan delivered another significant result in the girls race. Competing alone for Grant Union, Long Cowan improved a previous personal best by 1 minute, 40 seconds in a strong first meet of the season. The substantial time drop highlighted early progress and gave the girls side a promising starting point.
The meet served as a useful introduction to competition for Grant Union’s less experienced runners while giving the returning athletes a chance to sharpen their approach on a manageable course. With Sam Bailey setting the pace for the boys, Long Cowan making a major personal-best improvement and Ezra Randleas. Ezra completing a first race, the Prospectors left Cove with several performances to build on as the season progresses.
