Prospectors Shine at Race as Eliza Breaks School Record

STANFIELD, Ore. - Eliza broke Grant Union’s school record with a time of 20 minutes, 38 seconds, leading a strong collection of Prospectors performances Friday evening at the Stanfield twilight meet. She finished fourth, while Amaris placed ninth and Ivy took 10th, giving the high school girls three runners in the top 10 and helping move the team to No. 4 in the Class 1A/2A state rankings.

The girls’ front-running trio made the most of a fast course and showed the value of racing as a pack. Eliza set the pace with her record-setting performance, and Amaris and Ivy followed with two more strong finishes. Their tight top-10 grouping provided an encouraging example of how Grant Union can combine an individual breakthrough with collective strength.

Grant Union’s high school boys took the course at twilight, with a full moon lighting the route as the Prospectors produced several personal bests. Riggin led the team in sixth place with a personal-best time of 17:59.89. Landon followed with a season-best 18:25, Thomas recorded a personal-best 18:34, Osmar posted a personal-best 18:49, and Kaleb added another personal best in 19:25. Five runners finishing within about 90 seconds of one another demonstrated the depth of the boys’ pack, while Colton and Espn rounded out the team’s strong effort.

The Race meet also presented a new test for Grant Union’s junior high runners. The 3-kilometer course was longer than the 2.5-kilometer distance used at the previous two meets, and competitors had to manage hills, changing running surfaces and sustained wind. With gusty conditions producing headwinds, crosswinds and tailwinds at different points, pacing and patience were essential throughout the race.

Sam Bailey led Grant Union’s partial junior high boys team with another personal best and an eighth-place finish. Blaine James, Oliver LaFramboise and David Archibald followed, helping the group meet the difficult conditions with a steady team effort. The experience of adjusting strategy across the hills and varied surfaces provided another important step in the runners’ development.

For the junior high girls, Shayann Gosnell led the way with her season-best performance over 3 kilometers, followed by Nox Long. Gosnell continued her progress at the longer distance, while Long delivered another strong race and showed continued improvement. From a school record and multiple top-10 finishes to a deep collection of personal bests, the Prospectors left Stanfield with plenty to celebrate and a strong foundation for the next stage of the season.
