Prospectors Show Net Strength in 3-1 Setback at Prairie City

PRAIRIE CITY, Ore. - Grant Union opened with energy and confidence Tuesday night, but Prairie City answered by winning the next three sets to hand the Prospectors a 3-1 loss at Prairie City High School. The Prospectors delivered a substantial first-set victory before the hosts shifted the match’s momentum and completed the comeback.

Before the first serve, the teams paused for a moment that carried meaning far beyond the final score. The Prospectors presented Timber Winegar’s family with her No. 11 volleyball jersey, honoring the impact Timber continues to have on the program. Sharing the moment with her family gave Grant Union’s players and coaches a powerful reminder of the larger purpose behind competing together.

Grant Union carried that emotion into a strong opening set. The Prospectors communicated well, played with confidence and established control early enough to earn a convincing set win. Their energy was evident across the court, and the fast start showed what the team can accomplish when it remains connected and assertive.

Prairie City battled back after the opening set, taking the next three to secure the match. As momentum changed sides, Grant Union had difficulty sustaining the consistency and composure that fueled its early success. Prairie City made the Prospectors work through longer stretches, and Grant Union could not recreate its first-set rhythm often enough to force a decisive fifth set.

The Prospectors’ defense at the net remained one of the night’s brightest positives. Grant Union’s front row read Prairie City’s attack well, moved into position and produced several big blocks against the hosts’ middle and outside hitters. That physical presence disrupted attacks and forced Prairie City to work for points, giving the Prospectors a strong defensive foundation on which to build.

The four-set result provided a clear next step for Grant Union: maintain its energy, communication and confidence from the opening serve through the final point. The Prospectors will take those lessons back to practice before playing Friday, Sept. 18, at 12 a.m. PDT.
