Hope International blanks Benedictine Mesa, moves on in GSAC Baseball Championship

IRVINE, Calif. - Hope International stayed in the winners bracket Monday afternoon, defeating Benedictine Mesa 3-0 in the 2026 GSAC Baseball Championship at Great Park Stadium behind a complete-game shutout from Josh Landry.
Landry went all nine innings for Hope, allowing eight hits and no runs while striking out six on 116 pitches. Benedictine Mesa put traffic on the bases throughout the game, finishing with eight hits and five runners left on base, but could not break through against the Hope right-hander. Cody Campbell kept Benedictine Mesa within range with a strong outing of his own, working eight innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine in the loss.
The game's first run came in the bottom of the third, when Spencer Davis led off the inning with a solo home run down the right-field line. Hope added another run in the fourth. Hunter Essang reached and later came home when Eddie Cotto singled to shortstop, pushing the lead to 2-0. That margin held for much of the afternoon as both pitchers settled in and neither defense committed an error.
Hope finally added insurance in the eighth. Davis, who finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, came around again when David Shackelford lined an RBI single to right-center for a 3-0 lead. Shackelford also drew a walk, though he was later caught stealing. For Benedictine Mesa, Ben Schnurman collected three of the team's eight hits in a 3-for-4 performance, but the Redhawks could not produce the timely hit they needed.
The victory sends Hope International forward alongside ACU to the winners bracket semifinal Tuesday at noon, while Benedictine Mesa drops into an elimination game against OUAZ at 6 p.m. Monday night. Monday's results wrapped up only the second round of the championship, with one more round still scheduled for Wednesday. Attendance for the afternoon game was 100, with David Springer behind the plate and Stu Rains and Dan Clements on the bases.
