Master’s Builds Big Lead on Day One of GSAC Women’s Swimming Championship

The Master’s surged to a strong lead on the opening day of the 2026 GSAC Women’s Swimming Championship on Friday at the Soka Aquatics Center, piling up 197 points behind multiple individual victories and a sweep of the relays through two sessions. Arizona Christian closed the day in second with 106 points, followed by College of Idaho (62), host Soka (47), OUAZ (32) and Simpson (2). The meet will conclude Saturday morning with the final championship session.

The Master’s set the tone early with sprint standout Clara Patterson and IM specialist Katherine Dyer each collecting two individual wins to headline the opening day. Patterson captured the 50-yard freestyle in 23.98 seconds to open the meet, then added the 100-yard butterfly in 58.48 during the evening session. Dyer controlled both individual medley events, taking the 200-yard IM in 2:04.90 before returning to win the 400-yard IM in 4:29.39 to further extend the Mustangs’ advantage in the team race.

Depth in the middle-distance and stroke events also powered The Master’s. Kylee Sears won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.75 and added a strong 500-yard freestyle swim at 5:11.07 to contribute valuable points. In the backstroke, Megan Sutanto claimed the 100-yard back in 59.43 after already posting a 24.07 in the 50 free, while breaststroker Bridget Mick added another event title for the Mustangs by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.40. Those individual wins, combined with several 1–2 finishes across the program, allowed The Master’s to steadily build separation from the rest of the field.

Relay dominance proved just as important for The Master’s as its individual standouts. The Mustangs opened the championship with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:37.49 and later touched first in the 400-yard medley relay at 3:57.30 to close the first session on a high note. They carried that momentum into session two, where The Master’s again finished on top in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:49.29. Winning all three relays on day one significantly widened the margin at the top of the standings.

Arizona Christian stayed within reach of second place by stacking consistent podium finishes and breaking through for one of the night’s marquee individual swims. Hannah Jyawook delivered the Firestorm’s first individual victory of the meet with a 5:07.50 performance in the 500-yard freestyle, one of the top distance times of the day. Jyawook later added a 4:31.86 in the 400-yard IM to help Arizona Christian keep its grip on second as College of Idaho and Soka looked to stay in contention in the middle of the team table.

College of Idaho, Soka, OUAZ and Simpson each picked up points through finalists and consolation swims, keeping the team race active across all six programs. Soka used familiarity with its home pool to stay within striking distance of the podium. Though they did not match The Master’s depth, each program placed swimmers into scoring positions to remain a factor in the overall conference championship.

With The Master’s holding the lead entering the final day and Arizona Christian and College of Idaho vying to close the gap, Saturday’s championship finale at 9:25 a.m. will determine whether the Mustangs can convert their day-one dominance into a conference title. Additional individual events and the remaining relays will provide opportunities for movement throughout the standings as all six teams look to finish the GSAC Women’s Swimming Championship on a strong note.
