La Sierra tops Arizona Christian 21-13 to reach GSAC Championship

La Sierra used a fast first quarter and a timely defensive takeaway to defeat Arizona Christian 21-13 on Thursday at the Arizona Cardinals Flag Football Campus, earning a spot in the GSAC Championship. The Eagles scored on their first two possessions, built a 14-0 lead, and then turned back a late Firestorm rally in the closing minutes.
La Sierra set the tone immediately. Ariana Rivera found Matea Verdugo for an 18-yard touchdown on the opening drive, and the extra point made it 7-0. Later in the first quarter, the same connection struck again, this time from 5 yards out, to cap an eight-play drive and push the advantage to 14-0 with 5:22 left in the quarter. Verdugo finished with eight catches for 57 yards and both first-quarter scores, giving La Sierra the early control it would protect the rest of the night.
Arizona Christian answered in the second quarter and had chances to shift momentum. Shea Gonzalez intercepted a Rivera pass at the ACU 35 to stop a La Sierra drive, and the Firestorm followed with a 38-yard scoring march. CC Maccagnano connected with Anelly Alba for a 10-yard touchdown with 9:00 remaining in the second quarter, but the PAT was unsuccessful, leaving La Sierra in front 14-6 at halftime. Alba caught eight passes for 53 yards and a score, while Maccagnano kept Arizona Christian in the game by repeatedly finding short and intermediate openings in the passing game.
The decisive swing came in the third quarter after a quiet start to the half. Gia Aldama stepped in front of a Maccagnano pass and returned the interception 33 yards to the Arizona Christian 19-yard line, giving La Sierra a short field. The Eagles turned that into points when Rivera hit Kaylee Mejia for a 2-yard touchdown with 3:00 left in the quarter, stretching the lead to 21-6. Mejia was Rivera's most frequent target all game, finishing with 13 receptions for 71 yards and the touchdown.
Arizona Christian made one more push in the fourth. Maccagnano led a 59-yard drive and found Aleena Tobar for a 15-yard touchdown with 5:30 to play, and the successful PAT cut the margin to 21-13. Tobar finished with seven catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. The Firestorm forced a punt and drove into La Sierra territory in the final minutes, but the Eagles' defense held on fourth down to end the threat. Rivera then helped run out the final seconds as La Sierra closed out the win.
La Sierra finished with a 208-180 edge in total offense. Rivera completed 24 of 31 passes for 145 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Maccagnano went 22 of 42 for 176 yards and two scores. Gonzalez added 13 tackles for Arizona Christian, but La Sierra's early execution and Aldama's interception return proved to be the defining moments in a semifinal that sends the Eagles on to the conference title game.
