MESA, Ariz. – Third-seeded Park Gilbert survived a dramatic eight-round penalty-kick shootout to defeat sixth-seeded Soka 5-4 after the teams battled to a scoreless draw through 110 minutes Monday at Arizona Athletic Grounds in the opening round of the 2026 Great Southwest Athletic Conference (GSAC) Men's Soccer Championship.

The Buccaneers (12-6-1) controlled much of the offensive action, outshooting the Spirit (6-7-3) 23-9, but were unable to break through against Soka goalkeeper Jacob Warren, who finished with eight saves to keep his team in contention.

The opening half featured limited scoring opportunities, with both teams recording three shots. Park Gilbert's Olli Saksinen forced Warren into an early save in the 13th minute, while Soka's Rudy Garcia tested Buccaneers goalkeeper Nicklas Lagesen in the 30th minute.

Despite holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes, Park Gilbert entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

The Buccaneers increased their offensive pressure after the break, generating 14 second-half shots while limiting Soka to four. Saksinen came closest to breaking the deadlock, striking the post in the 65th minute before hitting the crossbar just three minutes later.

Warren continued to frustrate the Park Gilbert attack, making three saves during a seven-minute stretch late in regulation. He denied Linus Vilhelmsson in the 80th minute, Daniel Becker in the 85th and Caden Dosmann in the 86th to preserve the scoreless tie.

Park Gilbert maintained its attacking advantage through overtime, outshooting Soka 6-2 across the two additional periods. Warren added three more saves, including a stop on Ilan Rodriguez-Roda in the 109th minute, sending the contest to penalty kicks.

Both teams converted their first three attempts in the shootout before Soka gained the upper hand in the fourth round. Becker missed his attempt for Park Gilbert, and Luca Aiello converted for the Spirit to give Soka a 4-3 advantage.

The Buccaneers responded in the fifth round when Dosmann converted to even the shootout at 4-4. Soka had an opportunity to advance, but Robbie Cotton missed his attempt, extending the shootout into sudden death.

Neither team converted in the sixth or seventh rounds, setting up a decisive eighth round. Robin Dahlberg stepped forward and converted for Park Gilbert before Soka's Justin Wu missed the final attempt, securing the Buccaneers' 5-4 shootout victory.

Saksinen led all players with five shots, while Vilhelmsson and Rodriguez-Roda added four apiece. Park Gilbert held an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.

Warren's eight saves highlighted Soka's defensive effort, while Lagesen recorded one save across 110 minutes to preserve the shutout for Park Gilbert.

The Buccaneers advance to face second-seeded The Master's in Thursday's GSAC semifinal at Reese Field in Santa Clarita, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT, with the winner advancing to the conference championship match Monday, Nov. 9.
