Kelso Falls to Camas in Four Sets Despite Strong Defensive Effort

KELSO, Wash. - Kelso High School fell 3-1 to Camas in a hard-fought volleyball match Tuesday, September 29, at home, taking the third set before a narrow fourth-set loss ended the match. The Hilanders lost by scores of 22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 23-25 despite recording 22 blocks.
After dropping the opening two sets, Kelso found its rhythm in the third and pulled away for a 25-18 victory to extend the match. The Hilanders carried that momentum into a tightly contested fourth set, staying within reach of forcing a deciding fifth. Camas prevailed 25-23 to finish the match.
Sheena McGregor led Kelso’s attack with 14 kills and contributed across the court, adding 18 digs, two aces and five blocks. Maali Amrine provided another productive attacking option with 12 kills. She also finished with 11 digs and two aces, giving the Hilanders support both offensively and defensively.
Harlee Barnes anchored the back-row defense with 32 digs, leading Kelso’s effort to keep rallies alive. At the net, Alena Chilton recorded 10 blocks and Charlee Philips added seven. Along with McGregor’s five, those performances accounted for the Hilanders’ 22 blocks and made front-row defense a major part of their performance.
Addison Hislop and Bailee Hamergren directed the offense with 18 and 17 assists, respectively. Hislop also delivered four aces, while Hamergren contributed two. Their serving complemented the two aces apiece from McGregor and Amrine, giving Kelso production from several players at the service line.
Kelso’s third-set response and two-point margin in the fourth kept the match competitive after Camas built a two-set lead. The Hilanders paired that recovery with contributions in attacking, setting and defense throughout the lineup. The Hilanders will look to bounce back in their next contest on Thursday, October 8, against Mountain View.
