Experienced, Athletic Provets Set Sights on Playoffs
Providence will enter the new basketball season with experience, speed and an aggressive defensive identity. Coach Alex De La Garza returns six varsity letter winners, including four all-district selections, as the Provets pursue a playoff berth and a TAPPS 5A District 4 championship. One of the most athletic teams in program history, Providence plans to apply full-court pressure, force turnovers and turn those takeaways into transition opportunities.
Senior point guard Kaylee Camacho will direct the experienced group after earning first-team all-district recognition last season. She averaged 8.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.5 assists per game during the reported 2025-26 season. Camacho’s ability to handle the ball and organize the offense will be important for a team looking to improve on a 10-23 overall record.
Junior Guard Selene Cedillo returns after leading Providence in scoring and steals. A second-team all-district selection, Cedillo scored 330 points and averaged 10.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. Junior guard Sophia Guerrero, another second-team selection, contributed 4.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists per game. Junior forward Olivia Martini earned all-district honorable mention and led the Provets with 5.7 rebounds per game while adding 2.2 steals.
That returning production gives Providence a foundation for its pressure-based approach. The Provets averaged 11.4 steals and 27.5 rebounds per game last season, but improvement on the glass remains a priority. Providence also will look for better free-throw shooting, more efficient offense and stronger ball security after shooting 24% from the field and averaging 17.7 turnovers per game. Converting defensive pressure into controlled transition possessions could help raise last season’s average of 32.7 points per game.
Several matchups will provide early and district tests. Providence opens its non-district schedule on the road against longtime rival Holy Cross at 5:30 p.m. CST on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026. Providence opens district play on Jan 5 versus St. Augustine - Laredo. The Provets also have a Jan. 8 district rivalry game against St. Anthony. Those games should offer an early measure of whether Providence’s experienced backcourt, team speed and defensive pressure can produce the playoff push the Provets expect.
