Unity Seats Brings Rangely Veterans Together for Football and Remembrance

Friday night brought a good football game and an even better sense of community to Rangely as Dolores High School visited Rangely High School. The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office was hoping to see the Panthers come out on top, but the evening remained a memorable one because of the people who shared the experience and the spirit surrounding the game.

Through the US United Unity Seats program, the sheriff’s office spent the evening with 11 Rangely-area veterans. They sat together, watched the game and visited throughout the night. The gathering created space for neighbors to connect through conversation and a shared love of their community, reflecting Unity Seats’ goal of bringing people together with respect, even when they may hold different viewpoints.

The experience also highlighted how many veterans call the Rangely area home. For a small community, Rangely has a strong veteran presence, and bringing a group of them together made the evening especially rewarding. Hearing some of their stories while sharing the excitement of a local football game was a privilege for the sheriff’s office.

One of the night’s most memorable moments came before kickoff. Football players from both teams walked over and shook the hand of every veteran in the group. The gesture, joined by strong support from fans, demonstrated the respect the Rangely community and its visitors have for those who served.

The game also provided a solemn opportunity to remember the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. On the 25th anniversary of that day, gathering with local veterans added special significance to the evening. The community honored the promise that those lives and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

The Unity Seats experience united neighbors around a good game, shared stories and gratitude for service. For the veterans, the sheriff’s office and the broader community, Friday night showed how sports can create common ground, strengthen relationships and remind people that they can sit together not as adversaries, but as neighbors.
