Unity Seats Honors Veterans During Meeker Football Victory

The Meeker Cowboys gave their community another reason to cheer Thursday night, defeating Cedaredge during a high school football game in Meeker. No final score was available, but the home team’s victory added to a positive evening that brought the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, Meeker veterans and community members together through the US United Unity Seats program.

Unity Seats creates space for law enforcement leaders and residents with differing viewpoints to sit side by side at a sporting event. Rather than meeting as adversaries, participants share the same seats, the same cheers and the same experience as neighbors. In Meeker, members of the sheriff’s office joined local veterans to watch the game, talk and share stories about military service and the veterans’ experiences.

One of the night’s most memorable elements was sitting beside Meeker veterans from The Honor Guard. The Honor Guard supports most of the high school’s sporting events, providing a visible reminder of service and sacrifice while strengthening the connection between local veterans, students and families. Their presence made the Unity Seats gathering especially fitting.

Positivity from the community filled the evening as the Cowboys competed on the field and conversations continued in the stands. The shared setting offered a simple but powerful example of bridge-building: People can hold different perspectives while still listening, showing respect and finding common ground through community traditions such as high school football.

The gathering also honored those killed or affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and recognized the heroes who served others in response. A similar event was held in Rangely on Sept. 11, extending the program’s outreach across Rio Blanco County. Together, the two events reflected the sheriff’s office’s commitment to relationships built through presence, conversation and mutual respect.

For participants and the wider community, the Meeker event was a great night to remember those who fought for the nation’s freedoms. The Cowboys’ win made the occasion celebratory, but the lasting highlight was found beside the field, where the sheriff’s office, veterans and residents shared stories, honored service and experienced the game together.
