Unity Seats Builds Community Connections at Del Norte Football Victory

The Del Norte Tigers gave their home crowd plenty to celebrate Sept. 5, defeating the Justice Phoenix 44-0 at Del Norte. Attendees remained upbeat despite a delay caused by travel difficulties for the Phoenix, and the afternoon became about more than the final score. Through the US United Unity Seats program, the game provided a welcoming setting for neighbors with different viewpoints to sit together, cheer and enjoy relaxed conversation.

The Unity Seats gathering brought together the Mayor of Del Norte, a Rio Grande County Commissioner, the Del Norte Police Chief, a Del Norte Police Officer and representatives from South Fork Fire Rescue, the Del Norte Fire Department and the Del Norte Ambulance. Military veterans and residents of Del Norte also participated, creating a section filled with people from many walks of life. Some had been asked to attend, while others learned about the experience through the Rio Grande County Sheriff's Office's pre-event post.

Because the area is a close-knit community where many people already know one another, the shared seats offered a place to reconnect and strengthen relationships. Participants discussed the game, sports in general, concerns about the future of the county and the country, and asked questions affecting local residents. Others caught up with old friends and acquaintances. The conversations remained casual and non-confrontational, showing that differences do not have to prevent neighbors from listening to and respecting one another.

On the field, the poise and athleticism of the young players stood out. Eight-man football requires players to contribute on both offense and defense, making their effort especially impressive. The Justice Phoenix endured a particularly challenging trip but arrived ready to begin quickly. Young women were inspired to see Isabella "Bella" Gonzales suit up and play during the game. The crowd responded enthusiastically throughout the Tigers' 44-point performance, with interceptions and home-team touchdowns producing some of the afternoon's loudest cheers.

A military veteran color guard honoring several branches of the armed forces added special significance to the gathering. The event brought the community together to honor the memory of 9/11 and recognize active military members, veterans and first responders for their role in preserving the nation's way of life. For the Rio Grande County Sheriff's Office, Unity Seats demonstrated the power of sports to create common ground, encourage respectful conversation and remind people that they remain neighbors even when their viewpoints differ. Patriotism is alive and well in Rio Grande County.
