Saint Joseph Academy Student-Athletes Reflect, Connect and Commit to Service

Forty-four Saint Joseph Academy student-athletes stepped away from competition and focused on reflection, connection, and service during the Athletic Department's inaugural Student-Athlete Day of Reflection on Aug. 14, 2026. This event challenged participants to consider how they could become better teammates and leaders in their community.

Following a welcome and prayer, the student-athletes joined mixed groups and created their own team names, logos and slogans. They then completed team-building challenges centered on trust, communication, encouragement and problem-solving. The activities helped students build relationships beyond their regular teams while showing how listening, cooperation and empathy can strengthen an entire athletic program.

Mental performance coach Colleen Groomes of Optimus Mind shared tools for personal growth, confidence and teamwork. Maureen Fallon Adler ’79, co-moderator of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, also helped participants explore what it means to be a Christian athlete. Together, the sessions moved the day’s focus away from individual results and toward supporting teammates, serving others and leading with love.

One of the day’s most personal moments came when participants wrote thank-you letters to their parents and others who have supported them along the way. The exercise gave the student-athletes time to recognize the encouragement, sacrifice and guidance behind their athletic journeys. It also reinforced a central message of the retreat: An athletic legacy is shaped not only by wins and results, but also by the people an athlete supports and lifts up.

The retreat closed with a commitment ceremony in which the Jaguars pledged to be positive student-athletes throughout the school year. Their commitments included welcoming others, celebrating teammates, offering encouragement, leading by example and serving without being asked. The Athletic Department hopes to make the Day of Reflection an annual event, giving student-athletes a chance at the beginning of each school year to refocus on team-centered and community-centered athletics.
