The Wheeler County Rattlers pushed Lyle / Wishram / Klickitat to a deciding fifth set before falling 3-2 on Thursday. The Rattlers won the first and fourth sets, but an early deficit in the finale proved too much to overcome in the 25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 8-15 loss.
Wheeler County set the tone by pulling out a closely contested opening set. With neither side able to create much separation, the Rattlers delivered enough points late to secure a 25-23 win. The match remained tight in the second set, when Lyle / Wishram / Klickitat responded with a 25-22 victory to even the match.
The visitors moved ahead by taking the third set 25-21, leaving the Rattlers one set from defeat. Wheeler County answered with its strongest response of the match. The Rattlers stayed composed through another back-and-forth set and won 25-21, forcing a race to 15 for the match.
Seniors Molly McMurray and Nola McGreer helped Wheeler County maintain its attack through five sets, working effectively as a setter-outside hitter combination. Their connection gave the Rattlers an offensive foundation during the match's extended rallies. Senior Lindzey Neasham also provided solid serving and hitting. Senior libero Marin Temple, and junior middle blocker Juuna Watkins provided an important defensive presence, making several point-saving digs and blocks to keep rallies alive and give Wheeler County additional opportunities to score.
The Rattlers could not duplicate their fourth-set start in the deciding set. Lyle / Wishram / Klickitat established an early advantage, and Wheeler County was unable to erase it before the shortened set reached its conclusion. The 15-8 result ended a match in which points were contested throughout and momentum shifted repeatedly across the first four sets.
Wheeler County will return home to face South Wasco County at 5:30 p.m. PDT Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Rattlers will look to carry forward the resilience that helped them answer a 2-1 match deficit and force Thursday's contest to a fifth set.
