Wheeler County overcame a difficult opening set and a determined Pine Eagle squad to earn a five-set road victory Saturday, winning 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12. The second leg of a grueling road trip tested Wheeler County throughout the match, but the team responded in the deciding set to secure the 3-2 win.

Pine Eagle controlled the opening set 25-17, forcing Wheeler County to adjust against an effective block and persistent defense. Wheeler County answered immediately, reversing the eight-point margin with a 25-17 victory in the second set. That response evened the match and shifted momentum before Wheeler County moved ahead with a 25-20 win in the third.

Nola McGreer made an important adjustment at the net as the match progressed. Rather than repeatedly attacking Pine Eagle’s blockers with power, McGreer added finesse to her hitting and looked for ways to place the ball around the block. Her variation helped Wheeler County maintain its attack against a scrappy opponent that continued extending rallies.

Pine Eagle stayed alive by taking a tight fourth set 26-24, sending the match to a race to 15. Molly McMurray’s spot serving became a key part of Wheeler County’s response, while her senior leadership challenged her teammates to finish the match. Wheeler County held firm in the fifth set and closed out the victory 15-12.

The result gave Wheeler County a hard-earned win after five demanding sets and showed the team’s ability to adjust after early trouble. Wheeler County will continue its road schedule against Condon on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. PDT.
