Tigers Post 177 in Seven-Stroke Loss to Malvern
MIDVALE, Ohio - Jeffery Secrest shot a team-low 42 and Gavin Weaver followed with a 43 as the Strasburg Tigers boys golf team posted a 177 in a seven-stroke loss to Malvern on Thursday, Aug. 13. Malvern finished with a 170 to take first place in the dual match.
Jeffery Secrest and Gavin Weaver gave Strasburg two of its four counting scores in the low 40s. Jeffery Secrest led the lineup by one stroke, while Gavin Weaver’s 43 kept the Tigers within range of Malvern. Nick Cleveland added a 45, and Lathen Culbertson completed Strasburg’s team total with a 47.
The four counting rounds left the Tigers at 177, an average of 44.25 strokes per scorer. Strasburg’s top four were separated by only five strokes, but Malvern’s 170 proved low enough to secure the match by seven.
Henry Hershberger finished with a 49, narrowly missing a place among Strasburg’s counting scores. Emmett Fierbaugh also competed for the Tigers and recorded a 65, giving Strasburg six individual rounds in the match.
Conditions were overcast in Midvale, with light winds of 2 mph and temperatures ranging from 66 to 80 degrees. The calm wind provided a steady setting for the 4 p.m. competition.
Although Malvern claimed the team victory, Jeffery Secrest’s 42 and Gavin Weaver’s 43 gave Strasburg a strong pairing at the top of the lineup. With Nick Cleveland and Lathen Culbertson rounding out the scoring quartet, the Tigers finished the day seven shots behind the match winner.
