Crystal Peterson Honored in October JH/MS Coaches Spotlight
We’re proud to recognize Coach Crystal Peterson as the Wyoming Coaches Association (WCA) October JH/MS Coaches Spotlight honoree. Ruline O’Neill nominated Peterson for this recognition. Our spotlight celebrates coaches across Wyoming whose positive leadership makes a lasting difference for junior high and middle school student-athletes.
Peterson is entering a 37th year as a teacher and coach at Evanston Middle School, with a commitment to students that extends from athletics to the classroom as a math teacher and Math Counts educator. O’Neill, a colleague for 36 years, describes Peterson as kind, loving, knowledgeable and dependable, with a consistent habit of putting students first, even when doing so required personal sacrifice.
That commitment showed when Peterson continued coaching while Peterson’s daughter competed at the high school level. When O’Neill offered a reminder that taking time to watch was OK, Peterson replied, “I made a commitment to these kids and I owe it to them.” O’Neill recalled that this dedication was both Peterson’s personal expectation and something Peterson’s family understood.
Foundational coaches are often among the first people to connect with young athletes on a personal level, and their teaching can shape how students grow in sports and beyond. Peterson leads with the belief that every child deserves love, kindness and respect, using positive leadership to bring out each athlete’s best. O’Neill credits Peterson with positively impacting thousands of young men and women over the years and hopes hundreds of coaches across our state follow that example.
