Jay Camino Builds Lasting Impact Through Positive Middle School Coaching

The Wyoming Coaches Association proudly recognizes Jay Camino, a teacher and coach at Clear Creek Middle School in Buffalo, Wyoming, whose patient, encouraging leadership has made a lasting difference for student-athletes and colleagues. Nominated by Sandy Moon, Camino has spent his entire 27-year teaching career in Johnson County School District, including 20 years coaching middle school sports.

Camino coaches football, boys and girls wrestling, and boys and girls soccer, bringing high expectations and a steady, positive presence to every program. He mentors middle school boys while serving as a strong advocate for girls in wrestling. More important than any season record is the growth he sees in his athletes. Asked about wins and losses, Camino would simply say, "We get better every game because we learn." He makes a point of speaking with every student so each athlete feels seen at every practice, and his words remain consistently positive and encouraging.

That commitment extends well beyond his regular responsibilities. Last year, Camino coached after school throughout the entire academic year while filling in for the high school wrestling program after a coach stepped away because of an illness. Despite the demanding schedule, he continued to bring enthusiasm and reassurance to the athletes, who valued his presence. Camino also supports the next generation of coaches. With two new coaches joining the middle school football program, he has embraced the chance to offer advice, encouragement and practical guidance as they develop in their roles.

Foundational coaches at the junior high and middle school levels are often among the first to influence student-athletes personally, making their teaching role essential to long-term growth and success. Camino represents the positive, student-centered leadership the Wyoming Coaches Association is committed to celebrating across the state. His service reminds athletic administrators and member schools that patient coaching, personal connection and a focus on learning can strengthen students, staffs and entire school communities. The WCA welcomes nominations of other positive and impactful junior high and middle school coaches throughout Wyoming.
