A 5-2 decision over Avon Lake is Avon's third victory in a row
Casey Birth and Evan Masuga combined to allow just two runs on four hits as host Avon defeated rival Avon Lake for the second time this season Thursday, taking a 5-2 decision. After winning their third consecutive game, the Eagles are now 7-11 overall and 4-7 in Southwestern Conference play.
Birth tossed five innings and allowed just one run on three hits, striking out four. Masuga pitched the last two innings, giving up one run and one hit.
The Shoremen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Avon answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and never trailed the rest of the way. The Eagles added two runs in the fourth inning and another single run in the fifth, rendering Avon Lake’s single tally in the seventh frame meaningless.
Avon cracked out seven hits, led by Bryce Chura with two, including a double. Chura also scored a run. Nathan Peters, Kyle Delury, Sam Griffiths, Cameron Ocepek and Matthew Sheldon each had one hit for the Eagles. Peters had a two-run single, Delury scored twice, Griffiths had a double, and Ocepek scored a run and knocked in a run.
Avon is scheduled to play again on Friday at Westlake.
