Baseball team edges Brunswick, 5-4, with walk-off double

Nathan Peters cracked a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday as host Avon came from behind to defeat Brunswick, 5-4, in non-conference baseball action.

The Eagles, now 4-9, gave up a run in the top of the seventh to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead but came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the victory. The game was a back-and-forth affair, as the hosts took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but then allowed three runs in the top of the third.

Seven Avon players combined to knock out eight hits, and the Eagles also were walked eight times. Kyle Delury led the way with two hits, while Landon McQuality, Bryce Chura, Sam Griffiths, Gavin Koehler, Carter Jenny and Peters each had one hit. Griffiths knocked in two runs for Avon and Koehler, Jenny and Peters each had one RBI.

Casey Birth pitched a strong 6.1 innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run on six hits. Hugh Muzik finished the seventh inning and was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run and striking out one.

The Eagles are scheduled to host Normandy on Friday.
