Baseball team opens the season with 2-1 loss to Rocky River
Avon’s baseball team opened the season on Saturday with a good, old-fashioned pitchers duel, dropping a 2-1 extra inning decision to Rocky River at ForeFront Field.
Avon pitchers Evan Masuga, Logan Millsaps and Ben Strichek allowed just three hits and one earned run and struck out 11 Pirates in eight innings, but Rocky River’s Andrew Locsei pitched a complete game, giving up one unearned run and two hits while striking out 13 and walking one.
The Pirates opened the scoring on an RBI groundout by Jake D’Amico in the fifth inning. The Eagles scored the equalizer in the sixth inning with an unearned run. The winning run was also unearned and came on an error by Avon in the top of the eighth inning.
Trevor Sykora and Bryce Chura each had a double for the Eagles, and Sam Griffiths had a single.
Avon’s next two games are against Southwestern Conference foe North Ridgeville, on the road on Monday and at home on Tuesday.
