Both bowling teams place seventh in Southwestern Conference tournament

Sunday was not a great day for Avon’s bowling teams as they competed in the Southwestern Conference tournament at Nautical Lanes. Both squads finished seventh out of eight teams in the competition.
The boys knocked down 3,636 pins, finishing behind Amherst (4,340), Avon Lake (4,137), North Ridgeville (4,080), Midview (4,024), Olmsted Falls (3,940), and Berea-Midpark (3,856) while placing ahead of Elyria (3,284). Grady Stipe was the top individual for the Eagles, bowling a three-game series of 179-187-200 (566). He was backed by Bennett Ernst at 175-207-169 (551). Avon also got two-game scores from Nathan Stewart at 180-182 (362) and Cole Corpus at 152-160 (312) and single games from Nick Sanchez (170) and Austin Wolfe (136).
The girls had a team total of 2,389 pins to place behind Amherst (3,169), Midview (3,139), Berea-Midpark (3,082), North Ridgeville (2,900), Olmsted Falls (2,894) and Elyria (2,448) and in front of Avon Lake (1,782). The Eagles were led by Ava Benninghofen at 108-140-106 (354), followed by Cameron Gallup at 117-128-97 (342), Grace Freeman at 110-88-130 (328) and Kay Forbis at 126-115-86 (327). Molly McEwen added a two-game series of 104-130 (234) and Kara Patton had a single game of 103.
“Things didn’t go as planned today, but it’s another learning experience,” said coach Robin McQuaid. “You know, we’re prepping for sectionals. That’s always the end goal, and I feel like today was another chance to get out there and make it like a practice, but a competitive practice, and just see where we are. Then, you make notations and you put them into practice this week and really prepare for what’s to come.”
Avon will be competing in the Division I sectionals Sunday at Yorktown Lanes, but first they will face Brunswick on Monday at Nautical Lanes and Berea-Midpark Wednesday at Brookgate Lanes.
