Avon’s boys and girls cross country teams both placed 10th in their respective races Saturday at the Medina Milt Place Cross Country Festival, the final meet of the regular season.

Using a tight pack, Avon’s boys scored 322 points in the 27-team field. The team title was won by Peninsula Woodridge, the defending state champion in Division III and winners of a record 11 state titles. The Bulldogs, who are heavily favored to repeat as state champions, topped the field with 68 points.

The Eagles had only a 29-second gap from their top finisher to their fifth, and a 38-second gap from one to seven. They were led across the finish line by senior Blaise Wieber, who covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 2.26 seconds. He was followed by Jared Keressi (52nd in 17:11.70), Nick Thompson (71st in 17:23.56), Luke Fox (75th in 17:25.06), Matthew Lochbihler (84th in 17:31.15), Liam Nobles (88th in 17:36.13) and Jackson Bratton (91st in 17:40.88).

Avon’s girls, who are ranked second in the state in Division II in this week’s coaches poll, placed 10th with 265 points despite resting all of their top runners. The team winner was Massillon Jackson with 96 points. Jackson is ranked fifth in the state in Division I.

Crossing the line first for the Eagles was freshman Lauryn Hider who was 31st with a time of 20:31.03. She was backed by Stella Melott (50th in 20:59.78), Reegan Kacenjar (57th in 21:10.62), Brooklyn Fagan (63rd in 21:26.88), Alyssa Bratton (71st in 21:38.69), Isabella Eddy (72nd in 21:38.95) and Shaye Gorski (83rd in 21:48.60).

“Today was an awesome day to cap off the regular season,” said girls coach Justin Carroll. “We rested our top group, and this gave some varsity racing experience to some more runners, and they did great with the opportunity. It was a solid day as we gear up for the start of the postseason next weekend at the Southwestern Conference Championship. I’m excited for this group.”

Both the boys and the girls teams will be competing in the SWC championship Saturday at Lorain County Community College.
