Avon’s boys soccer team began defense of its Division II state championship Friday, blanking visiting Lakewood in the season-opener, 3-0. The Eagles became the first team from Lorain County to win a state soccer title last year when they edged Kings Mills Kings, 1-0, in overtime.

Six players return who started for Avon in the state title game, including London Carnie, who had a hand in all three Avon goals against Lakewood. After a scoreless first half, Carnie assisted on consecutive goals by junior Brayden Carlin and then completed the scoring with an unassisted goal of his own. Avon goalkeeper Owen Huron made four saves in posting the first shutout of his high school career.

Next on the schedule for the Eagles is a home matchup Wednesday with Bay, which finished as state runner-up last year in Division IV and also handed the Eagles one of their two losses in a 2-1 decision.
