For the second consecutive year, Ashley DeHaven fell one match short of reaching the Division I state tennis tournament.
Playing in the district tournament at the Springside Athletic Club in Akron, the senior needed to defeat familiar opponent Katelyn Bussard of Amherst to finish among the six qualifiers. However, she lost to Bussard, 6-0, 6-1. DeHaven won her first-round match over Hailey Jung of Wooster, 7-5, 6-2.
Avon also had two doubles teams reach the district tournament, but the teams of Sam Jackson/Grace Gedeon and Samantha Gault/Karina Marsden both lost in the opening round.
However, the Eagles can take solace in the fact that they will be representing the Northeast Ohio district in the state team tournament next weekend, a first for the program. Avon will face Mason in one semifinal, while Upper Arlington and Toledo St. Ursula will square up in the other. The semis will be followed by a championship match and a third-place match.
