Continuing its late-season surge, Avon’s baseball team won for the fourth time in five games Monday, taking down Southwestern Conference foe Elyria, 7-3. The Eagles are now 8-12 overall, 5-7 in conference play.

Kyle DeLury led the Avon offense, reaching base four times with three singles and a walk. He also scored three runs and stole two bases. Nick Lombardy had one hit, knocking in three runs and scoring twice. In addition, Sam Griffiths had a hit and knocked in two runs, Cameron Ocepek had a hit and an RBI, Owen Huron had a hit and scored a run, and Nathan Peters had an RBI.

The host Eagles took control of the game right from the start, scoring twice in the first inning and once in the second. The Pioneers cut the margin to 3-2 in the fourth inning, but Avon came right back in the bottom of the frame, breaking the game open with four runs.

Matthew Sheldon pitched six innings for Avon, allowing one earned run, striking out nine and walking just one. Evan Masuga efficiently pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, as eight of his 11 pitches were strikes.

Avon was recently named the 21st seed in the OHSAA Division II district tournament. The Eagles will play at No. 6 Brecksville-Broadview Heights in a first-round game on May 26. The winner of that game will face the winner between No. 11 Avon Lake and No. 22 Twinsburg in a district final on May 28 at Tri-C West in Parma.

The Eagles will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Elyria.
