Eagles earn extra-inning baseball victory over Mayfield, 2-1
Landon McQuality had a double and drove in both runs Saturday as host Avon edged Mayfield in eight innings, 2-1, in non-conference baseball action at Crushers Stadium. With the victory, the 2-8 Eagles ended a six-game losing streak and also stopped Mayfield’s winning streak at four games.
Avon managed just four hits, but all went for extra bases, as Jack Goldian had two doubles and scored a run, McQuality had a double and walked twice, and Bryce Chura had a triple. The Eagles scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a walk-off walk.
Avon’s pitchers pounded the strike zone while giving up just one run and six hits. Starter Casey Birth went 5.1 shutout innings and threw 42 strikes compared to 25 balls among his 67 pitches. Sam Griffiths pitched the final 2.2 innings and earned the victory, finding the strike zone on 19 of his 27 pitches.
The Eagles host Midview on Monday before playing the Middies on the road on Tuesday.
