Eagles earn thrilling victory over Avon Lake in 12 innings

Kyle Delury singled in Nathan Peters in the top of the 12th inning Monday as visiting Avon won its second consecutive extra inning game, taking down rival Avon Lake, 3-2. The Eagles are now 6-11 overall and 3-7 in Southwestern Conference play.
Half of Avon’s victories this season have come in extra innings: 3-2 over Avon Lake in 12 innings, 8-7 over North Ridgeville in 10 innings on April 30, and 2-1 over Mayfield in eight innings on April 18.
The Eagles won the game despite striking out 22 times, as both teams had outstanding pitching. Matthew Sheldon went 6.2 innings for Avon, allowing just two unearned runs. Ben Strichek then threw 2.1 scoreless innings followed by Logan Millsaps, who tossed three scoreless innings and earned the victory.
Bryce Chura cracked a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead, but the Shoremen came right back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. The score remained tied until Avon plated a run in the 12th inning to take the victory.
The teams will meet again Tuesday at Avon Lake.
