Eagles excel at the line, take down Amherst in overtime, 87-79

Joe Magill | Avon High School | Feb 7, 2026

Despite giving up three more field goals than they scored Friday, Avon’s boys basketball team made up for it from the free throw line and pulled out a hard-fought overtime victory over visiting Amherst, 87-79, in Southwestern Conference play. With the victory, the Eagles are 13-5 overall and 7-5 in league play.

Avon made 22 of 28 free throws for 78 percent, while the Comets made just 6 of 13 for 46 percent. Gavyn Kittelberger, who led the Eagles with 21 points, made 8 of 9 from the line, leading the way for the hosts. Sam Griffiths, who scored 11 points, made 5 of 8 free throws, but, more importantly, the sophomore made 5 of 6 in the extra period when Avon outscored Amherst, 12-4.

The Eagles jumped out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter, but the Comets gradually chipped away at the deficit and then outscored Avon in the fourth quarter, 19-14, to tie the score at 75 at the end of regulation. Amherst’s Jack Coleman led all scorers with 34 points, 21 in the second half and 12 in the fourth quarter. However, the senior guard was held scoreless in overtime.

Joey Ziegler backed up Kittelberger with 20 points, while Brooks Good had 15, with 10 coming in the first half. Griffiths added 11 points and Trevor Sykora had nine.

Avon will be in action against on Tuesday when it hosts Lorain, which is 2-16 and won its first league game Friday in the rugged Greater Cleveland Conference, edging Strongsville, 68-65.
