Eagles open girls soccer postseason by blanking Lakewood, 8-0
Sydney Thomas posted three goals and an assist as Avon’s girls soccer team began postseason play Tuesday by dominating visiting Lakewood, 8-0, in a Division II district semifinal.
With the victory, the second-seeded Eagles move on to a district final on Saturday. Avon, 12-3-2, will face Southwestern Conference foe Olmsted Falls at 11 a.m. at Warren Howland for the right to move on to regionals. The SWC champion Eagles defeated Olmsted Falls about a month ago, 4-0. The Bulldogs earned their way into the district final with a hard-fought 4-3 overtime victory over Austintown-Fitch.
In addition to the hat trick put up by Thomas, Avon also got two goals from Delaney Moyer, with Sienna Stuckart, Sam Huen and Kaitlyn Buchino adding single tallies. Moyer also had two assists, while Thomas, Stuckart, Huen, Buchino, Ella Briggs and Katie Pepera each had an assist.
The victory was the fifth shutout of the season for Avon, which has gone 12-1-2 since a loss to Hudson in the third week of August.
