Eagles open softball season with 4-1 victory over Willoughby South
Maria Young pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts and Jocelin Ochs had a two-run home run as Avon’s softball team opened the season Wednesday with a 4-1 victory at Willoughby South.
The Rebels scored first with a single run in the second inning, but Young held them in check the rest of the way, allowing just three hits and two walks. Avon’s defense was sound behind the sophomore as the Eagles did not commit an error. Catcher Averie Reichert topped the Eagles with 16 chances and threw out a runner trying to steal second base.
Avon took the lead in the third inning with the home run by Ochs and a run-scoring double by Young. Jenna Smith and Reichert each had two hits for the Eagles and Ochs led the team with two runs batted in.
Next on the schedule for Avon is a home game Monday against Brookside.
