Eagles place third at districts to earn berth in regional meet
It’s been a frustrating season for the Avon boys cross country team, as not one of the top seven runners has been completely healthy from start to finish. But the Eagles came through on Saturday at the Division II district meet, placing third to earn a spot in the regional meet for the third consecutive year. Led by senior Jose Alvelo’s fourth-place finish, the Eagles scored 136 points, topped only by Revere with 112 and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy with 113. Alvelo crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 51.37 seconds over the 5,000-meter course at Lorain County Community College. Alvelo was backed by Nick Owens (22nd in 17:56.03), Jared Keressi (26th in 17:59.09), Matthew Lochbihler (39th in 18:22.04), Owen Burns (45th in 18:23.93), Blaise Wieber (71st in 18:51.92) and Anthony Danicki (105th in 19:46.20). The regional meet will be held at Youngstown Boardman High School next Saturday. The Division II boys race is scheduled to start at 2:20 p.m. That race will be followed at 3:30 with the Avon girls running in the Division I race.
