Avon’s boys basketball team went on the road Tuesday and ended a three-game losing streak with a 70-55 victory over highly regarded Gilmour Academy. With the victory, the Eagles are now 10-5.

Gilmour is ranked second in Division III in Northeast Ohio in the MaxPreps RPI system that the OHSAA uses to seed teams in the postseason tournament. The Lancers also have been ranked in the top 10 in the state in Division III by some ratings. Gilmour, 12-2, has victories over Brunswick, Olmsted Falls and North Ridgeville on its resume.

The Eagles turned up the defense in the first half, leading 15-7 after one quarter and 32-16 at the half. The lead was up to 51-34 entering the final period, more than enough cushion for Avon to hold on and win comfortably.

Sam Griffiths and Gavyn Kittelberger each scored 16 points to lead the Eagles. Brooks Good and Preston Johnson each added nine points for Avon, and Trevor Sykora had eight.

Next on the schedule for the Eagles is a home contest Friday with Berea-Midpark, which currently sits stop the Southwestern Conference standings with a one-game lead over Olmsted Falls. When the teams met on December 19, the Titans came from behind to pull out a 56-55 victory.
