Eagles sweep through SWC tennis to win seventh consecutive title

For the third time in seven years, Avon’s boys tennis team completed a clean sweep of the Southwestern Conference. The Eagles went 7-0 in SWC duals and then won all five finals in the SWC championships Tuesday at Avon to win their seventh consecutive SWC title.

Several of Avon’s players cruised to their championship, but one who didn’t was sophomore Aarav Kishorepuria, who defeated Amherst’s Katelyn Bussard at first singles, 6-3, 6-3. Kishorepuria, who was the SWC champion at second singles last year, fell behind, 3-0 in the opening set before righting the ship and winning the next six games. The second set began in similar fashion, with Bussard breaking serve to go up 2-0, but Kishorepuria won six of the last seven games—including the last three in a row—to take the crown.

At second singles, Blake Netschke had a relatively easy time with Amherst’s Marie Schneider, winning by the scores of 6-0, 6-3. Netschke was the SWC champion last year at third singles. Ashton Schwanger rounded out the singles sweep by Avon, cruising to the title at third singles over Amherst’s Josh Tomlin, 6-1, 6-1. Last year, Schwanger was part of the pair that won the SWC at second doubles.

Avon defeated pairs from Midview in both doubles finals, with Caleb Free and Grant Nagy combining to defeat Kaiden Vonya and Marcus McMahon, 6-1, 6-1, at first doubles, and Bidwat Mishra and Jaxen Springer taking second doubles by the scores of 6-2, 6-1 over Trenton Popeck and Lila Booth.

Later this week the Eagles are scheduled to compete in the third round of the state coaches team tournament against Medina Highland, a team they defeated earlier in the season in a close match.
