It was a rivalry game that wasn’t a rivalry game.

Visiting Avon used an 18-0 scoring run in the second quarter Friday to break open a close game and turn its Southwestern Conference contest with rival Avon Lake into a laugher, 74-47. The Eagles are now 15-5 overall and 8-5 in SWC action.

Gavyn Kittelberger led Avon with 17 points, followed by Joey Ziegler with 14 and Brooks Good with 10. But on this night, it was the defense that stood out. The Eagles held a 20-15 lead early in the second quarter, but an 18-0 spurt pretty much put the game out of reach. By halftime the margin was 40-17, as Avon Lake managed just four field goals in the opening half. The dominance continued in the third period, with the margin reaching 59-31 entering the final quarter.

Avon Lake’s Ezra Jones led all players with 25 points, but none of his teammates managed to score more than six points in the Avon runaway.

The Eagles have two games remaining on their regular season slate, Tuesday at home against Bay and Friday at Elyria.
