The magical journey for Avon wrestler Eian Englehart ended just short of a state title in Columbus Sunday as the senior lost in the championship match in the Division I 215-pound weight class.

Englehart, who played a major role as an offensive and defensive lineman in Avon’s back-to-back state football championships, was pinned by St. Edward senior Aiden Peterson 1 minute, 4 seconds into the final match. It was the fourth consecutive pin for Peterson with none of his matches going longer than 2:42. Peterson is a three-time state placer for St. Eds, the alma mater of Avon coach Mark Jayne.

Englehart, who finishes at 46-2, was the lone Avon wrestler to reach the state tournament. In becoming the third state runner-up in program history—following Jack Roesch in 2019, Zane Zeman in 2011 and Tommy LaRosa in 2005—he scored 21 points to put the Eagles in 19th place as a team.

Englehart opened the tournament by pinning Cooper Frye of Delaware Hayes in 50 seconds. He then took an 11-0 major decision over James Moore of Normandy to reach the semifinals, where he downed E.J. German of Brecksville, 11-5.
