First half struggles for boys basketball result in loss to Elyria, 78-64
In their first really big basketball game of the season, the host Avon Eagles came out very flat, helping visiting Elyria build up a huge lead Friday before holding on for a 78-64 victory. The Eagles are now 9-3 overall and 4-3 in Southwestern Conference play. Berea-Midpark tops the SWC standings with a 6-1 mark, followed by Olmsted Falls and Elyria at 5-2 and Avon and Amherst at 4-3.
Entering the game having won eight consecutive games, Avon was in a position to make a statement to the rest of the SWC by defeating the Pioneers, the defending champions and preseason favorites. However, Elyria scored the first nine points of the game and held a 24-6 lead after one period. The lead got even bigger in the second quarter, as the Pioneers built what proved to be an insurmountable 44-21 halftime lead.
Joey Ziegler led the Eagles with 14 points, followed by Brooks Good with 10 and Gavyn Kittelberger and Trevor Sykora with eight each.
Avon will be back in action on Tuesday when they host SWC foe North Ridgeville.
